John Ternus officially became Apple’s chief executive on September 1, ending Tim Cook’s 15-year run at the top. The transition is orderly: Cook remains involved as executive chairman, while Ternus also joins Apple’s board. The timing is anything but comfortable.
Artificial intelligence is changing what people expect from personal computers, phones, and the software between them. Apple enters that shift with advantages few companies can match—more than 2.5 billion active devices, control over its operating systems, custom silicon, and a product ecosystem that already travels with people all day. Yet it also enters with something to prove. Delayed features and an uneven Siri rollout have made Apple look reactive while competitors move quickly.
A product builder takes the top job
Ternus joined Apple’s product design team in 2001 and rose to lead Hardware Engineering. Apple credits him with work across iPad, AirPods, iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch, along with efforts in reliability, materials, repairability, and manufacturing. That résumé matters because the next phase of AI will not be won by a chatbot floating above an unchanged device.
The more consequential contest is over the interface: what the device understands, what it can safely do, how naturally it fits into daily life, and which new hardware forms become possible when intelligence is built into the system. A leader steeped in hardware engineering is therefore not an odd choice for an AI era. It is a bet that Apple’s route back to the front runs through product integration.
Apple’s structural advantages are not yet product advantages
Apple can coordinate processors, sensors, operating systems, applications, and services without negotiating across a loose collection of vendors. Its custom silicon provides a foundation for on-device models, lower latency, privacy-preserving computation, and predictable performance. Its installed base gives a useful feature enormous distribution on day one.
But those assets only matter when customers notice the outcome. People do not buy architectural control; they buy a phone that handles an irritating task, a laptop that helps finish meaningful work, or a wearable that understands context without becoming intrusive. The gap Ternus must close is the distance between Apple’s enviable ingredients and an AI experience people would miss if it disappeared.
Siri is the credibility test
Apple’s early AI promises raised expectations that Siri would understand personal context, work across apps, and take useful action. The slower and less consistent arrival of those capabilities has damaged confidence precisely because the assistant is the most visible expression of Apple’s intelligence layer.
Fixing that does not mean copying every general-purpose chatbot feature. Apple’s opportunity is narrower and potentially more valuable: dependable assistance grounded in a user’s devices, permissions, communications, and routines. Reliability matters more than theatrical demos. A small set of actions that work predictably across first- and third-party apps would do more for trust than a long feature list that only works some of the time.
The next AI interface may be hardware
Smartphones remain the center of personal computing, but AI is reopening questions that the app era appeared to settle. Should every task begin with finding and opening an app? When should a device listen, see, summarize, or act? How should an assistant reveal what it knows and ask for confirmation? Those are software questions expressed through microphones, cameras, displays, wearables, and input systems.
Ternus’s hardware background could help Apple answer them as one product problem. AirPods can become an always-available audio interface. Apple Watch can add immediate health and environmental context. Vision products can connect intelligence to spatial computing. The iPhone and Mac can provide the processing, identity, and application layer beneath it all. The winning experience may not be one new device; it may be a coordinated system that makes each device more capable.
Restraint still needs momentum
Apple has good reasons to move carefully. AI systems can leak private information, misunderstand intent, fabricate answers, or take the wrong action. Those risks become more serious when an assistant has deep access to personal data and system controls. Apple’s emphasis on privacy and on-device processing can become a genuine differentiator.
Care, however, cannot become a permanent explanation for late delivery. Ternus must create a development rhythm that combines model progress with product discipline: fewer promises made too early, clearer release boundaries, stronger evaluation on real tasks, and faster iteration after launch. Trust comes from both safety and follow-through.
The standard is a noticeable consumer experience
Cook leaves Ternus an unusually strong company: a vast installed base, a services business measured above $100 billion annually, custom silicon, global distribution, and deep customer loyalty. The new CEO does not need to rebuild Apple. He needs to aim those strengths at the most important platform transition since the iPhone.
That makes his mandate deceptively simple. Turn AI from a collection of announcements into a coherent product experience. Make Siri dependable. Give developers useful system capabilities without surrendering privacy or control. And define an interface that feels native to Apple’s hardware rather than bolted onto it. If Ternus can do that, his engineering background will look precisely suited to the moment. If he cannot, Apple’s structural advantages will remain impressive on paper while the center of personal computing moves elsewhere.
